The tastiest corner of this city just so happens to lie 10 floors below our very feet.
48th and 6th.
That's where the fruit guy and gal set up shop each afternoon. Bearers of berries. Purveyors of peaches. Pickers of plums. Champions of cherries. Merchants of mangoes. The colossus of clout. {*The colossus of clout.*}
We're not on a first-name basis. But he calls me sweetheart. And I ask about her daughter.
I peeked out Noah's office window this afternoon to be sure they were there, then ran down for my daily ration of goods.
I was greeted with a smile, an explanation to other fruit seekers that I get to pick out my own fruit (being a daily customer comes with its perks) and an inquiry, "where have you been? haven't seen you in a while!"
I didn't have the heart to tell them I made a Costco run last week. And we didn't need their services for a few days while we polished off seven pounds of grapes, four pounds of strawberries, three pounds of cherries, three pounds of blueberries, three mangoes, two muskmelons, two pineapples and a bunch of bananas.
I felt like I'd cheated on them.
They sure showed me what I'd been missing.
Those peaches are the size of softballs and those apricots are 10/$1.00. Better believe we're making jam.

Wow! There were so many alliterations in this post that I thought my face might melt from the overabundance of awsomeness!
I agree. The produce is impressive, but your alliteration skills are even more so.
Noah's Mom was so nice to come talk to me at the Artisan Fair! When she said they were there to do their cherries at a farmer's market I wondered what y'all were doing without the seasonal fruit at your fingertips. I feel so much better knowing you're walking down a few flights of stairs for it. :)
I love the Sandlot! Thanks for bringing that memory back. Um.... 10/$1.00? That's unheard of for Apricots. They are Jon's favorite, but I never buy them because they are so expensive. NYC is the best! Did you bring the Costco cart back on the Subway with you? :) Oh... and the NC beach? We were sort of looking into it yesterday. When can you go? We need to talk.
How'd you learn to write like this!? I love every word! 'colossus of clout!' GENIUS!
If I calculate that correctly...that's over 20 lbs of fruit. Impressive, how is your digestive track doing? LOL. I can picture you on the subway with all that fruit; love it!
you are a cheater! ha ha! What a fun opportunity, though! mmmm fruit. I hope summer never ends.
Best peach I've had outside of Utah.
Why is it that I live in "farmland" and have to pay top dollar for fruit and you city dwellers get it on the cheap? Does the universe seem slightly tilted? Happy for you, craving softball-sized peaches for me.
YUM.
